Upon reading some Miss Manners today I stumble across her article about introductions. She says that upon introducing yourself you should use both your first and last names.

While I can understand in certain situation this would be proper I hardly see myself in some introductions using my first and last names. Such as meeting someoe at the park or grocery store. Why in the world would I give my last name?

I would do so most likely in proffesional settings.

Whats your take on this?

I agree, it is not always appropriate to give your last name also. Most of the time your first name is more than enough.

Even if it's polite, it's not really safe in this day and age. You don't know who this person may be and there are millions of cases of identity theft each year. I'd just say, 'Hi, I'm Ista.' When I get to know the person better or it's pertaining to the workplace, then I'll give out my last name.

the only time I can see it is in a professional situation , even telemarketers and such , when they call your home most the time they wont give the last name either. When I worked at the restaraunt they were trying to get us to wear name tags with first and last names on them. I flat out refused. I didnt mind the first name but there is no need for everyone to know the last name. Phone book can provide more info than you wish someone to have. All they have to do is look up your first and last name.
