| PETA whackos at it again...
WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

| HOLY COW! (lmao no pun intended) Are they serious? Is this real? I am flabergasted...lmao there is no way they think they can do this and alo I grew up on the farms , the Momma cow IS NOT taken away from her baby. A daory farm was up the road and Dad worked there I spent plenty of time there. The momma is with her baby til the baby dont need the momma any longer. Also on these dairy farms it is very seldom a cow gets pregnant. The bulls are kept seperate and ONly when the farmer needs to inroduce more into his herd will he have them together. They are in a seperate field from the milk cows. And they keep the milk going after the momma is no longer needed by continueing to milk her. As long as she is milked she will not dry up. This is a typical example of streching the truth. | |

| Oh wowieeeeeee! That is hilarious. And Fancy is very right about the dairy farms and that the calvs do stay with their mother and nurse all the way to the point of not needing it anymore and then the hefer is milked for the remainder (I believe like 1 yr give or take). That is too funny though! | |

| I can't help but think there is something more to this ... why hasn't Peta ever targeted Borden, Blue Bunny, Hood, or any other maker of ice cream? I think this may be a joint publicity campaign. | |

| I believe so too! The reason PETA has never targetted such things is because there is no harm to the animals in getting milk and making the items that come from it. These animals are very well cared for. | |

| I saw this on the news and just thought ick! Breast milk does not belong in ice cream!!! ugh! The reaction from people they talked to was pretty much the same- yuck, leave the breast milk for babies. I didn't grow up on a farm but seems to me the people that have dairy farms milk those cows twice a day, sometimes 3 times a day, everyday and it does not hurt calves or take milk from them. Oh, and the Swiss restaurant owner, well I hope he puts that on his menu if he starts using breast milk in his food. yuck! | |

| Is that true what they say about cows always having to get pregnant so the can keep lactating over and over? That is so sad! (I guess I always thought they'd continue lactating and not have to be induced repeatedly)
They are right, human milk was made for humans, however their proposed idea would be cruel to humans. I know they are all about animal rights but could you imagine how much milk women would have to pump?
Pumping is a LOT of work (as I said in the bf thread earlier) and that restaurant better compensate those women a ton of $$!!
I would only share my milk (besides for my own children) for emergencies, like that woman in China who breastfed 8 children after that earthquake recently. I don't see icecream as an emergency!!
PS: How much do they pay per ounce? hahaha, part time job! JK, I'm too greedy to share Juli's milk
Peta would have done a better job proposing soy milk instead!

| Esper I have been trying to find something for you, and yes I found it on a animals rights site. This has been open to debate for a very long time, and you will hear many diffrent opions. Oh and just in case anyone did not know I have been a member of PETA for 15 years. I still think Lillen is right about it being a joint publicity campaign.

OMG! Do you supposed they'd put the lactating mom's in stalls and have them pump away???? lmao! I bet there would be a long, long line of men wanting to run those milking parlors.

| The part I find disgusting about it is that milk rightfully belongs to the babies! Yet they want it to go to a dessert that is mass-marketed around the world? Breastmilk is made for nutrition not for gluttony. WTH, I thought Peta was better than that!
You're vegan, Donna? That's wonderful of you. I see where vegans are coming from, I really do. It doesn't mean I am one but I respect one's choice to choose that lifestyle.
I read the link you posted, thanks for sharing. I don't buy milk that often but when I do it comes from Trader Joe's (a healthfood store). I also buy cage-free or free range organic eggs. I got to admit, I do not discriminate which milk is used in my cheese! I also buy my honey from local growers markets, but that is because of the local pollens that I choose this.
So I guess PETA would also be anti-formula since it is dairy-based (except soy) and I once read that each can of formula is responsible for "x" amount of green land being eaten by cows. Guess the same sort of thing can be said about burgers.

| this topic got me thinking , "Is there any real BreastMilk banks out there?" Well yes! But this bank is only for babies not for commercial use. - Quote :
- The National Milk Bank (NMB) is a nationwide organization that collects donated human milk ensures milk safety and quality and makes it available for infants in need. We strive to make quality human breast milk available to all premature and critically-ill babies
http://www.nationalmilkbank.org/ I think its great they want to help the babies but again how many moms would this take?

| I've thought about donating to the milk bank as well, however, again, with the pumping issue, I've always hated it! I can't stand pumping! I'd love to help out babies whose mothers cannot bf yet want to provide their children with excellent nutrition. I just wish it were easier to do. A pump doesn't "suck" the way a baby does! It's not as effective, not even close.
However, I'll be out of town for 5 days starting Wed (first time away from Juli) and I'll have to pump while there! I'm such a novice to pumping, lol! I mean I know how to but not very successful at it or know how long/how often to do it. This will be a learning experience for me. I hope the airlines don't think its a bomb with all those gadgets, knobs and technical things on the electrical pump!!! I have a hand pump for the plane. (if anyone needs a reccommendation on the best handpump: Medela!! and WIC gives it free)
Did anyone see the woman on America's Next Top Model who pumped while she was there? Women do this for two reasons: 1. To not lose our milk supply while away 2. To not get engorged.
I wonder how/if they monitor the milk going into the milk bank! The diet is not really a problem (but some cases of too much dairy for babies with colic) but alchohol or drugs (medicine) should be monitored for sure.
