neighbors

Ok what would you do. Heres the story.

About a month ago we had some new nieghbors move in. I liked them and got a little friendly with them.
Hubby said he didnt want to be friendly because in the past we have always gotten nieghbors that have taken advantage of our generosity and before you know it they will be knocking on your door everyday for something. Well I wanted to give them a chance and told hubby we cant think that way about everyone so I proceded in becoming friendly.

Well a couple weeks ago they wanted to borrow some movies because they have no cable , so I let them and they returned it just fine.
But then starting last week she has knocked on the door for milk , sugar , eggs , cheese grater , butter.
Butter 2 times the first time I gave her a cup , I have not recieved the cup back. The next time I gave her the tub , she said she would return it but I have not seen it yet. Nor have I gotten my cheese grater back.

The only time it seems she knocks on door is when she wants something , never just to say HI.
I dont mind helping people out but now I am feeling I am being used since she never just wants to come say hi just for the hell of it.
If I let hubby know whats going on I am gonna hear the "I told ya so"

Well I guess I just made a vent thread I hope you dont mind.

No i don't mind and i know what u are going through. My nieghboor is very similar but a lil worse. She comes over and asks 2 borrow eggs or baking soda sometimes $ in the beging i was naive and just kept giving . Hubby told me i have 2 stop or she will keep walking all over me . Now i learned 2 tell her that oo i am sorry i am out i have 2 head out to the store myself. I am sorry and be on my way . There is only so much i can do.

I too have a neighbor like that, and worse yet, we work together too. She will come over and ask to borrow butter, onions and even bleach. I don't mind helping out once in awhile either, but I have asked her twice for something and neither time did she have it. And to make matters even worse I needed a ride home from work two different times and when I asked she just said that she had something else to do, or she wasn't coming home, yet, when I got home her car was there already. She said to me one day when she was having car problems that she might need to get up early and go in to work when I do b/c her car wouldn't start- so i told her my hubby had a meeting the next morning and that I was going in extra early and I didn't think she would want to go that early.

I have pretty much learned not to ask anybody for anything, and try to stick to my guns and say no when people are always asking me for stuff.

See, getting me started on something that drives me crazy...LOL!

Wow, I guess I am really lucky! I have never had neighbors like that. I've had neighbors that borrow things but I would borrow things from them and it all evened out. At one time I had a single guy living accross the hall from me who cicn't cook. I was living alone then- kids on their own but still got hungry for things one person can't eat alone- so I'd make wha I wanted and take him some. He was thrilled and he would then work on my car if I needed something done. I got the better end of it but he says he did cuz he got home cooking.
We did have people in our neighborhood that do borrow like your neighbors seem to but they never asked me. . . . . maybe they knew I would say no. The only thing that comes close is I did babysit once and only once for someone cuz her mom was sick down the street and she had nobody else- supposed to be for an hour or so and was more like 3 hours. I never did it again.
